Portraits of Courage Exhibit 3.0.013

Rooted in President Bush’s personal outreach and the ongoing efforts of the George W. Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, "Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors" showcases sixty-six vivid portraits and a four-panel mural created by President Bush himself. The subjects of these artworks are honorable members of the United States military who have dutifully served our nation post-9/11, individuals with whom the President has developed personal connections.

The brave men and women of our armed forces have confronted adversaries, liberated countless individuals, and thereby exemplified the genuine empathy inherent in our nation. Frequently, upon returning home, they bear injuries—both visible and unseen—that compound the difficulties of transitioning back into civilian life. Alongside these trials, studies reveal a disconnect between the civilian population and military personnel. A staggering seventy-one percent of Americans admit to limited comprehension of the challenges faced by veterans, a sentiment echoed by eighty-four percent of veterans who believe that there is scant public awareness regarding their struggles and those of their families.

President Bush endeavors for these tales of bravery and perseverance to pay homage to our military personnel, shed light on the often-unseen role of their families and caregivers in bearing the weight of their sacrifices, and enlighten Americans on how we can offer support to our veterans, enabling them to thrive.
